Registrations of new battery electric vehicles snagged a market share of 12.1% of all passenger cars in February 2023, according to the latest figures published by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
The European Union’s passenger car market grew overall by 11.5% year on year, reaching 802,763 units. The automotive chip shortage’s lingering effects on vehicle availability hampered stringer growth, ACEA said. Meanwhile, BEV registrations grew by 39.7% to reach 97,300 units.
All markets in the European Union, bar Czechia and Slovakia, saw double- and triple-digit percentage gains. The Netherlands scored a whopping 88.9% growth, France 45.7% and Germany 14.7%.
Hybrids did even better, capturing 25.5% of the market in February. The good news for lubricant makers throughout the EU is that petrol engines were still the drivetrain of choice in the bloc, with a market share of 36.9%, ACEA said.
The EU still needs to install more charging infrastructure, ACEA warned EU lawmakers last October.
