Car buyers in the European Union continued to shift toward zero-emissions mobility and sent March registrations of battery electric vehicles surging by 58%, year on year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
Registrations of all new cars in the bloc increased by 28%, over the same period, reaching 1,087,939 units. Internal combustion engine cars still have the largest market share, at 37.5%. But registrations of BEVs amounted to 151,573 units, resulting in a market share of 13.9%. Sales in the Netherlands alone increased by 132.6%.
The good news for the passenger car motor oil segment is that sales of non-plug-in hybrids increased by 38.1% to 264,694 units, year on year. This earned them a market share of 24.3%, up from 22.7% in March 2022.
Registrations of plug-in hybrids were less impressive. After negative growth in January and February this year, sales rose by 4.3% in March. Overall, PHEVs have lost market share by 1.6% to 7.2% in 2023 from 8.8% in March 2022.
