Two major sustainability events happened back to back in December 2023. Of the two, the one you least expect will have an immediate and significant impact on the lubricants industry.
Wrapping up on Dec. 13 was the United Nations Climate Change Conference, a.k.a. COP28. The events was held in Dubai, a location that raised a few eyebrows among many observers, environmentalists included. Despite the venue, important resolutions were made, not least a fund to recompense nations affected by climate change. Our special sustainability contributor Apu Gosalia gives the conference lack of overall impact a lukewarm score, mostly due to its lack of impact.
On Dec. 14, the European Union’s freshly minted its Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. The directive will have an immediate impact on a vast number of European and global companies that do business in the bloc.
