Nexolub, a trader of petroleum derivatives and chemicals, and energy company Cepsa joined forces to deliver what they say is the world’s first 100% carbon-neutral base oil shipment, they announced this week.
The shipment of 168,000 litres of base oils was calculated to have produced 108.47 metric tons of carbon dioxide. This includes all the emissions generated by extraction at the oil well, production and consumption of the base oils (100.96 tons), and from delivery to the customer by truck and ship (751 tons), Pablo Guerrero, Nexolub’s trading manager and head of renewables, told Sustainability InSite.
Net-zero lubricant base oils are a first step towards the medium-term sustainability of this type of product, the companies said. The offset is part of Nexolub’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and is working on a longer-term decarbonisation project, using carbon credits an immediate solution.
