The World Will End Some Day, Not Every Day

Jim Skea, the new head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), ignores doomsday climate change scenarios. Instead, Skea focuses on motivating us to implement climate protection measures.

“If you just keep sending out the message that we are all doomed, it paralyses people and prevents them from taking the necessary action to deal with climate change,” Skea said a few days after his election to IPCC chairman on July 26 in an interview with the German Press Agency. Skea has been involved in climate research for 40 years. He replaced Hoesung Lee as chairman.

Skea and the co-authors of the IPCC’s latest reports have always emphasized the “silver lining on the horizon.” They believe the technologies and instruments to mitigate climate change are available, they just need to be applied.

“The future of mankind is in our hands. Let’s use it,” Skea said.

The election of the professor of sustainable energy at London’s Imperial College marks the beginning of the seventh assessment cycle of the IPCC.

The council is a United Nations institution based in Geneva. Its experts compile the scientific knowledge on climate change every five to seven years. They point out options for action and their respective consequences. Decisions are made by governments.

The IPCC reports are the most important basis for political decisions on how to mitigate climate change. The next reports are expected in the late 2020s.

“Get involved!” says Skea to all Earth’s citizens. “Don’t sit on the sofa and watch the debates on climate change. Every single person can do something.”

Skea referred to citizens’ initiatives, but also citizens’ dialogues of municipal authorities or elections at the local level. “That is where many of the most important decisions will be made.”

The IPCC itself must also do more to better prepare its specific findings as a basis for action for certain groups. Skea named city planners, or farmers or businesses. “This whole thing is about real people and their real lives, not scientific abstractions,” he said. “We need to come down a bit.” Skea wants to focus on funding climate change mitigation and adaptation. “There is enough money in the world, the challenge is to get the financial flows to the right places.”

And this of course also includes the lubricants industry, I would wish to add. “This whole thing is about real people and their real lives, not scientific abstractions,” he said. “We need to come down a bit.”
