The timeline below illustrates the sheer number of engine oil categories required to meet today’s demands compared to a half of a century ago.

With the addition of specifications like Dexos1 Gen3 and ACEA 2023, the pressure and costs for oil formulators show no signs of easing. In fact, more updates and even completely new specifications are on the way. PC-12 is currently being developed, and the industry is working to flesh out what GF-7 will entail. The International Fluids consortium is also working to develop a set of global specifications for passenger car motor oils.
