Used engine oil is typically burned for heat, recycled into vehicle fuel or rerefined into base oil. But in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Abdulkarim Mwajasi realized it can be made into an effective treatment for urinary tract infections. UTIs affect around 250 million people per year globally, mostly women, children and the elderly, making them the second-most common infection, according to the Lancet. Mwajasi discovered that sulfur in used engine oil could be harnessed to kill bacteria. His product, called UTI Vector, was deemed safe by the Government Chemist Laboratory Authority.

Stellantis’ automotive parts and service network Eurorepar acquired new approvals for its Premium Sun SAE 5W-30 engine oil. The latest approval is Stellantis FPW9.55535/03, which covers the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5R), 1.2 EB Turbo (Gen I, II, III, and IV) and the DW12RU, found in Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel and Vauxhall models, according to a press release.

Valvoline Inc.’s acquisition of Breeze Autocare from Greenbriar Equity Group is nearing the closing stages. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission requested more information to complete the regulatory review. Valvoline says it will close the transaction in the second half of the year.
