Podcast 33: Dexron-VI, a Landmark Specification

A quarter of a century ago, General Motors broke out with its new six-speed automatic transmission. It was a major technological step up that required a new fluid. Dexron-III (H) couldn’t meet the new hardware demands. So GM decided to develop a new spec, enlisting help from chemical additives suppliers and test laboratories.

Those involved could not have foreseen the journey to develop the new Dexron-VI specification, which raised the bar for ATF, as we now head into the era of eight and 10-speed automatic gears boxes. Brent Calcut and Mike Glasgow were part of the Afton team who developed the spec. They share their recollections with Tim Sullivan, our executive editor.
