Grease for Direct Food Contact
Matrix Specialty Lubricants b.v. has introduced Foodmax Grease Inor 3-H, formulated with components approved for direct food contact by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The grease is designed for use as a multipurpose bearing grease and as a release agent on grills, ovens, loaf pans, boning benches, chopping boards or other hard surfaces in contact with meat and poultry.
The company says that Inor 3-H grease not only acts as a lubricant, but also protects machinery from aggressive contaminants, helping to increase equipment life. White in color, it meets NLGI 1 and 2 classifications and is suited for operating temperatures ranging from minus 30 degrees to 120 degrees C. www.lubes-portal.com
Organic Friction Modifiers
Croda has developed a range of organic friction modifiers based on polymer chemistry. Perfad 3000 and Perfad 3050 are said to reduce the coefficient of friction of engine oils to levels unachievable with conventional organic friction modifiers. This will enable formulators to develop engine oils that improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.
The company says the products also have excellent film forming properties, providing the potential to reduce engine wear and improve engine durability. The products do not contain sulfur, phosphorus or sulfated ash. Typical treat rates are 0.1 percent to 0.5 percent. www.crodalubricants.com
Spray-On Lube Survives High Temperatures
Klberpaste UH1 96-402 from Klber Lubrication is now available as a spray. The light-colored paste is for use during assembly and to lubricate screws at temperatures from 200 to 1,200 degrees C. The lubricant is registered as NSF H1 and is suitable for use in the food processing and pharmaceutical industries.
Klberpaste UH1 96-402 is a spray, and the company says it adheres to metals and resists water wash off, extending relubrication intervals. It contains special solid lubricants to help reduce wear. The spray can also be used in automotive, machinery and equipment applications. www.klueber.com
Full-SAPS Synthetic Meets European Specs
Amsoils full-SAPS 5W-40 synthetic motor oil completes the companys European Car Formula lineup, joining its mid- and low-SAPS oils. The company says the oils provide outstanding all-season performance, maximum fuel economy, and enhanced turbocharger protection. The full-SAPS oil meets the following performance specifications: ACEA A3/B3 and A3/ B4, API SN/SM, BMW LL-01, Mercedes-Benz 229.3/229.5, Porsche A40, Renault 0710/0700 and VW 502.00/505.00.
SAPS stands for sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur, materials deemed by some as harmful to air emission control systems used in some vehicles. Due to these concerns, limits on the chemicals have been added to some but not all engine oil specifications.

Engine Oils Pass Cold Start Test
Shell announced that its Helix Ultra 5W-30 and Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 meet ACEAs A3/B4 2012 specification for engine oil performance. This means that the oils pass the new CEC L-105 Low-Temperature Pumpability test, which analyzes their performance in the presence of a biofuel. The company says that the two oils were judged to work as effectively with biofuels as with regular gasoline or diesel.
The 2012 ACEA oil sequences are designed to protect against biofuel dilution while maintaining existing performance targets such as fuel economy. This is measured through a combination of new test methods and more stringent iterations of previous metrics.
