Joining the Dotz
Counterfeiting and adulterating lubricating oils is a growing global problem. Lubricant companies incur millions of dollars in lost revenue and reputational harm, while end users can suffer severe damage to vehicles when they use lubes not up to claimed specifications. Even though it is estimated that up to 15 percent of lubricants are affected globally, the problem is hard to prevent and detect. Until now.
Israeli start-up Dotz is about to launch an innovative carbon-based marker and detection system that can be used from the start of the lubricant production process all the way to the end users equipment, and at all points in between, to detect dodgy materials. The marker can be used by blenders, traders and oil servicers alike.
The main component of the marker uses patented graphene quantum dot technology developed by Rice University in Houston, Texas. Since it is non-metallic, it is safe for engines and filters and is completely soluble, the company told LubesnGreases. The marker is used in combination with a portable detection system that is currently the size of hardback novel but will be further miniaturized to fit in the palm of the hand, the company said. Results come back in real time, making it ideal for spot checks along the supply chain.
Dotzs custom-made markers can be unique to each user, meaning they are extremely difficult for counterfeiters to reverse engineer. They also remain stable in solution for months, if not years, despite changes in temperature and pH, the company said.
The marker will be available in pre-mixed, concentrated batches delivered in a client-compatible dispensing system. One kilogram of marker treats 1 metric ton of lubricant.

Shell Game
To meet the punishing climate and constant dust of the Omani desert, Shell Oman launched the new fully synthetic Helix Ultra SN Plus SAE 0W-20, in line with the growing trend in the Middle East for lower-viscosity oils.
The company claims the oil offers better wear and corrosion protection and high-temperature performance in smaller, turbocharged direction injection engines that suffer from low-speed pre-ignition. The oil uses base oil created with a gas-to-liquids process at Shells Pearl GTL plant in Ras Laffan, Qatar. The Pearl plant has capacity of some 1.35 million tons per year of Group II and Group III base oils. www.shell.com
Sulfur Cap Ahoy
As the International Maritime Organizations marine fuel sulfur cap looms, ExxonMobil has developed Mobilgard 540, a 40 BN cylinder oil designed for the low-sulfur fuels, available from the start of next year throughout the companys global supply network. Mobilgard 540 is compatible with ExxonMobils current cylinder oil, Mobilgard 525, the company claims. The company will continue supplying high BN cylinder oils for ships fitted with scrubbers and is also developing a new ultra-low BN formulation for LNG-fueled engines. www.exxonmobil.com
