Taro on the Cards

Chevron Marine Lubricantshas developed Taro Ultra, a range of Marpol 2020 regulation-compliant cylinder lubricants that the company says are compatible with almost all engines, bunker fuels and abatement technologies. Taro Ultra 25 is compatible with low sulfur fuel, distillates and many alternative fuels while Taro Ultra 140 is intended for applications using high sulfur bunker fuels that require an exhaust scrubber, the company said in a press release. Chevron has also received two no-objection letters from diesel engine and turbo manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions for its Taro cylinder oils to be used with MANs automated cylinder oil mixing system. The first letter is for Taro Special HT Ultra, a 140 BN product that helps prevent cold corrosion in slow-speed vessels burning high sulfur fuel, blended with Taro Special HT LF, a 25 BN lubricant ideal for low sulfur, distillate and alternative fuel types, the company said. The second allows for blending with Taro Special HT 100 (100 BN) and Taro Special HT LF. www.chevron.com

Busy BP

BPs lubricant subsidiary Castrol launched Hysol SL 37 XBB,a semi-synthetic soluble cutting fluid for steel and aluminum alloy machining operations that is part of its XBB metalworking fluids range. The fluid is boron, chlorine and formaldehyde free and can reduce biocide additive top-ups by up to 90 percent, leading to longer fluid life and therefore reducing operating costs, said the company via a press release. It went on to state the fluid is suitable for soft- and hard-water regions, reduces foaming, and in a 20 percent emulsion is non-irritating to skineven after repeated contact.

Castrol has also launched a new wind turbine lubricant, Tribol GR SW 460-1, using what it calls microflux-trans plastic deformation technology. The company claims the product bonds with metal surfaces to create a stable lubricant film that becomes even more pressure resistant with increasing load. Tribol GR SW 460-1 also resists shearing, wear and water ingress. www.castrol.com

Lubrication for the Common Man

Cortec, a corrosion products manufacturer from Minnesota, U.S.A., has released EcoLine ELP, a soy-based biodegradable lubricant and penetrant. The company recommends that the product can be used on all metals in applications such as lubricating moving parts, loosening rusty fixtures or as a basic metalworking fluid for milling, tapping, reaming, cutting, grinding and drilling. EcoLine ELP also repels water, has high flash and fire points, is not toxic to plants and is chlorine free, Cortec says. It contains 95 percent U.S. Department of Agriculture-certified biobased content and is qualified under the departments BioPreferred program. It comes in 312 gram aerosols, pails, totes and bulk.

Cortec also launched EcoLine Biodegradable vegetable oil and aluminum complex drilling rod grease, which
the company claims can replace other petroleum-based products currently on the market. Drilling rod grease reduces vibration during drilling, an application normally fulfilled by standard aluminum thickener greases that are non-biodegradable. EcoLine drilling rod grease is available in NLGI grades 1, 2, and 3 and is recommended for use in environmentally sensitive, wet areas.
