Evonik RohMax Additives GmbH yesterday announced the acquisition of the oil additives business of DOS, a producer of methacrylates. Terms were not disclosed.

Under the agreement, RohMax acquires DOSs customer base, intellectual property and polymerization kettles. Evonik transformed DOSs oil additives business into a new company, OOO Prisadki, which will continue making the same methacrylates under a tolling agreement with Evoniks Russian subsidiary, OOO Evonik Chimia.

RohMax officials called the deal a step forward for the companys operations in Russia.

It will allow us to establish ourselves as a local supplier, Managing Director Norbert Westerholt said, helping us to further improve collaboration with customers and industry partners through increased responsiveness and supply security, aided by an optimized distribution network.

DOS produced its polyalkylmethacrylate additives at a factory in Dzerzhinsk, a city near Nishny Novgorod. RohMax declined to reveal the size of the plant, except to say that it was the countrys largest producer of methacrylates. Most of its output goes to producers of acrylic sheets.

RohMax, which is based in Darmstadt, Germany, produces lubricant additives and synthetic base fluids for automotive and industrial fluids. The additives are sold under the Viscoplex brand, the base fluids under the Viscobase brand.

RohMax and Evonik have taken a strong interest in Russias growing market. For the past five years RohMax has been a co-organizer of the Lubricants Russia conference held each November.
