Lanxess AG will acquire the business and production assets of Chinese-based Jiangsu Polyols Chemical Co. Ltd., which produces polyalcohols that can be used in lubricants. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Jiangsu Polyols reported sales of 10 million in 2008 and currently employs 170 staff at its location in Liyang Liqiang Industry Zone of Jiangsu Province. Lanxess said its basic chemicals business unit is already a major supplier of TMP in China and will integrate Jiangsu into its global operations.

Trimethylolpropane (TMP) is a polyalcohol that is widely used in solvent-free coatings as well as in the production of polyurethanes, alkyd resins and synthetic lubricants. According to Jiangsus web site, the company produces about 15,000 metric tons per year of TMP, along with 2,000 mt/y of di-TMP, 2,500 mt/y of cyclic TMP and 10,000 m/t of calcium fornate.

The Lanxess basic chemicals unit, based in Leverkusen, Germany, operates several production sites in Germany, China and the United States.
