Lube Search Engine Launched

Chemidex LLC last week launched its Lubricant & Metalworking Fluids Cybrary industry search engine, which is intended to enable lubricant and metalworking fluid formulators to search participating suppliers data sheets and other information in one location.

The company formed partnerships with both the Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, whose members will have free access to the industry search engine. The Chemidex web site provides a keyword-searchable database of technical product information, including technical data sheets, material safety data sheets, formulations, technical articles, regulatory information and links for sample requests.

As of yesterday, the search engine included product information from just 26 lube industry suppliers. Notable omissions included Lubrizol, Afton Chemical, Infineum and ChevronOronite on the additive side, and base oil suppliers ExxonMobil and Motiva.

Matthew Perry, Chemidex vice president of sales and marketing, said that the Lubricant and Metalworking Fluids Cybrary will always be free for formulators. It will be free for suppliers for an as-yet-undetermined period of time, he added.

We havent set a date yet, but at some point down the road, the suppliers will be the ones to support us, as we continue to grow, Perry noted. He said Chemidex has not yet determined a fee schedule for suppliers participating in the Lubricant and Metalworking Fluids Cybrary.

He said Chemidexs business model is based on creating a tool that puts suppliers in front of their target audience at the time that they need it. So from that perspective, its the suppliers that are the ones that support us to do that, Perry added.

Perry said the system has tools in place to help suppliers protect their information.

Everyone has to register, and every single registration is validated to confirm we know who they are and who theyre with, Perry said. As a result of that, suppliers have the ability to block or restrict their competitors from viewing that information while also making their information available to their target audience.

ILMA Executive Director Celeste Powers said part of the Lubricant and Metalworking Fluids Cybrarys appeal is the ability to access the information in one place versus having to go to many different suppliers to obtain that. Having it all in one place, especially maybe for some of our smaller members, and with no cost associated with it, is appealing, Powers noted. I look at it as a member benefit to help them do their jobs better.

Ed Salek, executive director of STLE, said the resource will help the societys members make their research processes more informed and efficient.

Founded in 1997, Overland Park, Kan.-based Chemidex has offered search tools and resources in several other chemical markets, including coatings, adhesives, inks, personal care, cleaners, plastics and food.
