Trico Corp. has acquired Predict USA, an Ohio-based provider of used lubricant analysis, wear particle analysis (ferrography), vibration analysis, ultrasonic testing and thermography, in effort to boost its lubrication management services. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Under the deal, Valley View, Ohio-based Predict will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Trico. Predicts main laboratory in Cleveland, and two smaller laboratories in Pewaukee, Wis., and Toronto, Canada, will come under the Trico parent. Predict USA employees will become Predict Inc. employees.

With the acquisition, Trico moves closer to being that full lubricant management services company for industry, Trico President Nick Kroll told Lube Report.

The purchase gives Trico access to Predicts full line of laboratory services includingASTM standardized fluid analysis tests and ferrographic analysis tests, a procedure which separates and classifies wear particles found in used lubricating fluids.

Ferrography and the accompanying instrumentation is one of the niche strengths of Predict, Kroll said. Were looking to improve this part of the program, along with a host of other services.

Trico CEO Robert Jung explained that both companies complement one another. In the past, Trico would train and consult with companies and help them with every step. At the step where samples of oil are taken from equipment is where Trico needed to say, You need to find yourself a good oil analysis laboratory. Now we have one.

Headquartered in Pewaukee, Wis., Trico provides lubricant management training, including lubrication assessments, facility audits, consulting, and a complete lubrication product line. It also helps companies, as knowledgeable personnel retire, write lubricant process procedures for those new to the industry.

Tricos customers include refineries, chemical specialties companies, food and beverage companies, mines, paper mills and steel mills.

Strategically, this makes sense for Trico as we head toward our vision of worldwide leadership in lubrication management, Jung said. There is tremendous synergy with Trico and Predict brands and both of our customer bases will experience an immediate benefit from the combined offerings.

Kroll said that the deal closed on June 30, and the integration process has begun.
