Fuchs Petrolub Group will invest more than 20 million (U.S. $28.8 million) in its Fuchs Lubritech subsidiarys Kaiserslautern, Germany facility to keep pace with growth in international demand for specialty lubricants.

This project represents the single largest investment in the Fuchs Petrolub Groups history, the company said in its announcement Monday.

In 2002, Fuchs Lubritech in Weilerbach first expanded its capacity, transferring some of its production to the Industriegebiet Nord industrial estate in Kaiserslautern. That facility will now undergo major expansion to take over Fuchs Lubritechs entire Weilerbach production.

For the project, in addition to the existing area of 22,500 square meters, Fuchs Lubritech is acquiring expansion space of 33,500 square meters and also has an option on a further 25,000 square meters. As such, the groundwork for the companys future is being laid, ensuring that the jobs of the existing 180 employees are secured over the long term and that the 25 further jobs will be created in the medium term, the company said.

Fuchs Lubritech, which provides about 10 percent of the Fuchs Petrolub Groups total sales revenues, employs more than 400 people worldwide. Fuchs Petrolub Group is owned 100 percent by Fuchs Petrolub AG in Mannheim, Germany. As an organizational unit, Fuchs Lubritech is one of the core components of the groups specialty lubricants business.

Fuchs Lubritech produces specialty lubricants and release agents for industrial applications from the automotive and construction industries to machine engineering and agriculture. The range of offerings includes concrete release agents, adhesive lubricants, lubricating fluids and greases, pastes, solid film lubricants, food grade lubricants, aerosols, products for the glass industry and forming lubricants. For the rapidly growing wind power market, the company makes a variety of oils and greases, including gear oils, yaw and slew bearing greases, and gear greases.

The company said that because of limited space, expansion at Weilberbach itself is out of the question. Once the facilities have been completed in Kaisersalutern, the Weilerbach site will be cleared and restructured as part of a rededication project between Fuchs Lubritech, Kaiserslautern technical University and the Weilerbach local authorities, according to the announcement.

As part of the transfer of production, research and development departments now based in Weilerbach will move to new premises in the Industriegebiet Nord. A modern building complex is being built there to house laboratories, test facilities and offices, as well as a training center for clients and stuff, the company said, adding that it will invest in a modern logistics center at the location.
