Calumet Fire Spares Base Oil

A fire last Thursday morning on a gasoline platformer at the Calumet Lubricants refinery in Shreveport La. is not expected to have any impact on the plants base oil production.

The plant has the capacity to produce a total of 9,600 barrels per day of lubricant base stocks, including 3,000 b/d of API Group I stocks, 6,500 b/d of Group II, and 100 b/d of naphthenics.

Shreveport Fire Department units responded to the fire and assisted Calumets own fire service crews. Shreveport Fire Department spokesman Brian Crawford told Lube Report on Monday that the department received a call about the fire at 11:50 a.m. and units began arriving on the scene at 11:54 a.m.

Jennifer Straumins, vice president of investor relations for Calumet Specialty Products Partners, said the fire will not have any impact on the plants base oil production. It was a small fire, with the equivalent of about a half-days power outage, Straumins said. Everything was back up and running by the next morning.

She said the fire occurred on a gasoline platformer, one of two used at the plant to make gasoline. We have two platformers, and we only run one at a time, she said. So we did not experience any interruptions in production.

What we reported, and we were told, was that it was a rupture of a high pressurized product line, Crawford said. Some of the product was released and ignited. Theres a fire service on the scene at Calumet, and they took the appropriate measures to make sure everyone was evacuated and safely removed from the scene. Crawford said no workers were injured.

She said Calumet and local agencies are investigating the cause of the fire.

Calumets fire service personnel are very well trained, Crawford said. We incorporate some of our training with them, so our surrounding fire fighters at those stations are very familiar with their plant, its operations and their firefighters. So if we do have an incident, we have kind of a joint command system set up and perform very well together.
