Dow Biocides, BASF Raise Chemical Prices

Dow Biocides and BASF have recently hiked prices for chemicals used in lubricant manufacturing.

Dow Biocides announced a global price increase of 10 percent for both list and off list prices of its entire DBNPA (2,2-Dibromo-3-nitrilopropianamide) product portfolio, effective globally on Dec. 1. DBNPA is a broad spectrum biocide used to control bacteria, yeast and algae in metalworking fluid applications, along with water treatment, pulp and paper, reverse osmosis, oil and gas.

Dow Biocides product trade names for DBNPA include Acqucar DBNPA water treatment microbiocides, Antimicrobial 7287, Antimicrobial 8536, DBNPA 100 P-Tech, DBNPA 100 Powder and DBNPA Powder Water Soluble Bags.

Driven by the continued upward cost pressures in the market combined with the increasing costs in the highly regulated biocides industry, this price increase is necessary to enable continued reinvestment in our business, said Nanette Hermsen, global marketing manager for Buffalo Grove, Ill.-based Dow Biocides.

BASF announced earlier this month it is raising its prices worldwide for ethyleneamines by 100 (U.S. $130) per metric ton. The Ludwigshafen, Germany-based company said it needed to make the adjustment to address increased costs for raw materials as well as costs for energy and logistics.

The largest application area for ethyleneamines is in ashless dispersants for engine oils and in other lubricants, and in some dispersant-detergents for fuels. The lubricant additives function mainly to reduce formation of sludge and varnish deposits within internal combustion engines. The products are also used in manufacture of agrochemicals, surfactants for detergents, cleaning products and pharmaceutical active ingredients.
