Additive Prices Tack Upward

Costs for lubricant additives continue to rise as several more chemical suppliers announced markups last week. All based their actions on higher costs for energy and raw materials.

Great Lakes Chemical Corp. eliminated price protection mechanisms on flame retardants on July 6, and simultaneously imposed a worldwide increase of 30 cents per kilogram on any phosphate esters containing phenol. The company, which is headquartered in Indianapolis, said its actions were due to unprecedented price increases for phenol raw material driven by relentless cost increases in the oil and oil derivatives markets.

Arch Chemicals Inc., of Norwalk, Conn., said it will raise off-schedule prices for several lines of biocides by 5 percent, effective July 15. The changes affect products sold under the Triadine and Wayhib brand names, as well as IPBC fungicides.

Dow Chemical Co. announced markups of 2 cents to 3 cents per pound on North American prices for a long list of surfactants and polyglycols. Those increases take effect Aug. 1 and apply to products sold under brand names such as Tergitol, Triton and Carbowax. Dow is based in Midland, Mich.
