Koda Distribution Group recently acquired the assets of metalworking and industrial fluids distributor Colonial Specialty Chemicals and plans to merge it with Koda subsidiary Monson Cos. Terms were not disclosed.

There are significant benefits for both companies – the primary one for Colonial is in the metal manufacturing market, Craig Mott, executive vice president of Colonial Specialty Chemicals, told Lube Report. Mott said the combined companies have tremendous synergy, and that the merger will strengthen both companies presence in the lubricants, grease and metalworking fluids sectors.

With a combined sales force, Mott noted that the new company will have a greater concentration of sales representatives throughout the United States.

With Colonial joining Monson, [the combined company] is now able to offer more products, chemistries and technical support, which includes formulation, application and testing capabilities at our technical center in Leominster, Mass., Koda Marketing Manager Terry Mullin told Lube Report.

Colonial’s transition to Monson should be final by January 2016. Eventually, the company will drop use of the Colonial name and will just be called Monson. In the short term, the two names will co-exist on literature and websites, but eventually, only the Monson name will remain, Mullin said.

Ultimately, over the next 3 to 6 months, well be called Monson, and well incorporate their name. Colonials Mott said. I started this company from scratch in 2007, so this acquisition is very personal for me.

Based in Leominster, Mass., Monson has distributed water treatment products, lubricants and polymers in the industrial chemicals marketplace for over 30 years.

Conshohocken, Pa.-based Colonial Specialty Chemicals has specialized in distributing metalworking fluids in the U.S.
