Laugfs Lubricants Ltd. of Sri Lanka plans to set up its own blending plant in Hambantota port, on the southeastern end of the island nation.

The announcement came during a recent ceremony held to honor Laugfs lubricant distributors and dealers for their performance in 2011. No details on plant capacity and construction timeline were available. Once we obtain the license to set up the blending plant, we can provide more information, CEO Nalaka Madugalle told Lube Report.

In a statement, Madugalle said the company has many plans. This includes the commencement of the blending plant and introduction of more product ranges under the Laugfs brand name, he said. Currently we are in the process of obtaining the Sri Lanka Standard Certificate to our Laugfs lubricant products. With this we are aggressively looking forward to increase our market share and even make our products available in the region.

Managing Director U.K. Thilak De Silva told the ceremony audience that Laugfs planned to introduce many changes to its operations this year, adding that in that sense, we are planning on set up our own blending plant at Hambantota port in order to offer good quality for a range of products for the Sri Lankan market and the export market. Accordingly, we are in a better position to produce the whole range of products at our facility. Hambantota port is 240 kilometers southeast of the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, which is where Laugfs is based.

Company Chairman W.K.H Wegapitiya claimed Laugfs Lubricants is the only Sri Lankan company to get international standard certificates and an endorsement certificate from Daimler Mercedes Benz of Germany. We are the first Sri Lankan company to enter into the lubricant industry in Sri Lanka and now, after the completion of three years in the industry, we are now geared to enter into the next level of our operations, that is to start up our own blending facility in the country, Wegapitiya said.

According to Wegapitiya, Sri Lanka is heading into new era of development and Sri Lankan businesses are poised to grow to greater levels. The registration of motor vehicles in the country is increasing dramatically, he noted, including both motorcycles and automobiles. Being the only Sri Lankan company in the lubricant industry, we also see a great potential in the industry, he said.

Laugfs is a subsidiary of Laugfs Holdings Ltd.
