Drivers Views on Drain Intervals Shift

NPD Groups latest Aftermarket Outlook Survey found that 51 percent of vehicle owners believed engine oil should be changed every 3,000 miles or three months, down from 59 percent in 2007.

Its a gradual shift, so its not as if theres been a dramatic change overnight, David Portalatin, NPDs auto aftermarket industry analyst, told Lube Report. But what we see is consistent change over a fairly long period of time. So its an undeniable trend away from that standard.

He pointed out that the percentage of respondents saying they dont believe in a 3,000 miles or three months interval has increased from 35 percent in 2008 to 41 percent in 2011. Whats interesting is, when we ask people what the actual interval is, were seeing pretty significant growth in people that are either in the 4,000 to 5,000 mile range, or even over 5,000, Portalatin noted. Among respondents surveyed in August 2011, 20 percent had their oil changed between 3,001 and 4,000 miles, 22 percent between 4,001 and 5,000 miles, and 11 percent at more than 5,000 miles. About 39 percent said they wait between 2,000 to 3,000 miles to have their oil changed, down from 49 percent in 2007.

He surmised that the gradual change in attitudes is due partly to car makers longer recommended oil change intervals, and partly due to the economy. I think its possible some consumers may be looking at an extended interval as a means to saving a little bit of money, he said. We saw that in 2008 when the recession first hit, and over the last year – with escalating gasoline prices and consumers still looking to cut back on miles driven – its possible some consumers are seeing that as an opportunity to save money.

For the first time, the survey also asked auto owners what guided them to change their oil. Fifty-seven percent said they change their oil according to their vehicles service indicator light, 31 percent cited the next oil change reminder sticker put in their car, and 10 percent said they keep track of the mileage and months on their own.
