A fire brigade official said the fire destroyed about 40,000 liters of lubricant oil, according to an Agence India Press report yesterday.
According to Indian Oil, the fire was limited to a shed in a 3,000 square meter area of the plant. The companys fire and safety personnel put out the fire by 7:30 a.m. with no casualties, using fire tenders and hydrants. Additional fire tenders requisitioned from a Maharashtra Industrial Development Corp. fire station and neighboring industries assisted in putting out the blaze.
Indian Oil stated that security personnel noticed a spark at the plant at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. While preliminary reports suggest a short circuit led to the fire, the company noted, the exact cause and extent of product loss could not be assessed immediately.
The blending plant, which has capacity of 1,800 kiloliters per month, blends and fills lubricants in small cans and drums, along with filling specialty lubricants containers. The fire didnt affect the plants other facilities, Indian Oil stated, which include storage tank farms, a manufacturing plant, laboratory and fire-fighting facilities. Indian Oil sells lubricants and greases under the Servo brand.
