Metalloid Finds New Home

Metalworking fluids manufacturer Metalloid will move its headquarters from Huntington, Ind., to a larger facility in Sturgis, Mich., later this year.

Were probably planning to move in mid-summer to early fall, Metalloid CEO Fred Edwards told Lube Report. It really depends on how fast we can clean the building and upgrade it.

Edwards said the Sturgis facility has 30,000 square foot of space – including offices, laboratory and manufacturing – and was ideally suited to Metalloids type of work. The City of Sturgis, which is where Edwards and two other company executives reside, first approached the company about moving, Edwards said, though at the time Metalloid was happy with its 10,000 square foot location in Huntington.

Eventually, the manufacturer needed more room to grow but couldnt find a suitable building in Huntington. The city [Sturgis] was persistent, he recalled. The city came through, and the state came through with different grants and things like that, which made it a good deal. The acquisition cost was not disclosed.

Metalloid recently added two employees to its existing 17 employees in Huntington. We have two more coming, he said. In four to five years, we do plan on having 30 employees at the Sturgis plant. He noted that the employees at the Huntington facility will be moving to the Sturgis location.

Sturgis Mayor Barb Fisher said the city was excited about Metalloids biobased product lines and its growth potential. Thats the direction the companys heading in, Metalloids Edwards said.

Metalloid manufactures specialty lubricants, industrial cleaners and corrosion preventatives for metal processors globally. Markets served include automotive, HVAC, appliance, electrical and aerospace. Metalloid was founded in 1951 in Huntington. The company expanded operations to include a facility in Jacksonville, Texas, and blending in Springfield, Mo. Metalloid licensee Burr Held, S.A.R.L., of Genay, France, serves the European, Middle Eastern and Asia markets.
