Acuras Recalled for Fluid Leak

Honda Motor Co. has recalled 167,255 model year 2004 to 2008 Acura TSX sedans because flawed hose could lead to power steering fluid leaks and possible engine fires. The recall is expected to begin May 28.

Prolonged high under-hood temperatures may cause the power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely, and may cause the hose to crack and leak power steering oil, Honda said in its April 29 recall letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration. Oil leaking onto a hot exhaust pipe will generate smoke and a burning smell, and could potentially result in an under-hood fire.

American Honda Motor first received a report of a related under-hood fire on Sept. 9, 2009, and initiated an investigation Sept. 18. The carmaker completed the investigation April 20, confirming the defect existed.

Honda will contact owners of all affected vehicles by mail and ask them to take their vehicle to an Acura dealer, who will install a new heat resistant power steering hose, free of charge.
