French energy major Total announced last week that it had acquired Lubrilog SAS, thereby strengthening Total’s presence across several industrial lubricants segments and adding capacity to manufacture perfluorinated polyethether lubricants.
Lubrilog is a French company that specializes in PFPE lube. While expensive to produce, PFPE fluids are inert and are highly effective in extreme application environments, such as aviation components, and have superior oxidation resistance and load-bearing performance.
Paris-based Total, the world’s fourth-largest international lubricants company, has a wide portfolio of lubricants for automotive, marine and industrial applications.
“The acquisition of Lubrilog allows Total to acquire PFPE lubricant manufacturing capacity that it did not have in the past,” a spokesperson for Total confirmed to Lube Report via email.
Buying Lubrilog allows Total to compete with other European companies offering PFPE lubricants, including Klueber Lubrication, Solvay and Fuchs Petrolub.
Lubrilog also produces lubricants for open gear drives and chains for raw materials industries such as mining, cement and fertilizers. According to its website, its product ranges also include greases for several applications: high-temperature, high-speed bearings; food manufacturing; and small mechanisms.
“Our teams and engineers around the world will be able to leverage Lubrilog’s high-end technical solutions for the benefit of our clients,” Pierre Duhot, Total Lubrifiants’ senior vice president, said in a Sept. 22 news release.
