Motorcycle and moped sales in India rose 9% during the 2023 calendar year, while sales of new passenger cars topped 4 million for the first time ever, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Three-wheeler sales jumped 63%.

“Year 2023 has been reasonably satisfactory for the automobile sector, as passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and two-wheelers have posted single-digit growth, while three-wheelers have made a very good recovery,” society President Vinod Agarawal said in a news release.

“Various schemes of the government of India that have been operational now are showing good results and are also helping the auto industry to seamlessly transform to new powertrain realms. [The] auto industry is optimistic that the growth momentum would continue in year 2024 as well.”

Two-wheeler sales reached 17.1 million for the calendar year, up from 15.6 million the previous year. Three-wheeler sales totaled 680,550, up from 418,341 in calendar 2022.

The society reported passenger car sales reaching 4.1 million in 2023, but noted the number did not include sales by Mercedes Benz, BMW, JLR or Volvo. The number that the group reported for 2022 included JLR, but not Tata Motors, BMW, Mercedes or Volvo.

The number of commercial vehicle sales reported rose 5% from 933,116 to 978,385. Both of those totals excluded sales by Daimler, JBM Auto and Scania.
