Japan’s Lube Consumption Slumps

Japan's finished lubricants consumption and production both declined sharply in August, compared to the same period last year, according to data released yesterday by a government agency.

Yip’s Lube Profits Improve

The lubricants business of Hong Kong-based Yip’s Chemical Holdings Ltd. reported improved operating profit and sales for the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2020, when results were heavily affected by the emerging COVID-19 pandemic.

Albemarle Buys China Lithium Company

Specialty chemical supplier Albemarle Corp. announced yesterday that it has agreed to purchase Guangxi Tianyuan New Energy Materials Co., a start-up that recently finished building a lithium processing plant in southwestern China. The deal, which will cost Albemarle U.S. $200 million, appears focused on helping to meet demand for lithium derivatives from China’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle fleet.

Blumenthal Brands Integrated USA and Tide Water Oil Co. (India) Ltd. announced the beginning of a licensed manufacturing partnership to launch the Gunk and Liquid Wrench lubricants, penetrants, automotive and general-purpose degreasing and cleaning products in the Indian market. The initial roll out will consist of imported products that Tide Water Oil will distribute, and future plans include manufacturing in India and subsequent export to select countries.
