Shell plc has confirmed that train two at the Pearl GTL facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar sustained damage following attacks on March 18, while train one remains intact. Initial assessments suggest that repairs to the affected train could take about one year, Shell revealed on its website.
Pearl GTL, a joint venture with QatarEnergy, is a two-train facility capable of producing around 140,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day using 1,600 million standard cubic feet per day of feed gas from QatarEnergy. Following the attack, production across the entire facility was halted to allow for a full damage assessment.
The attack on Ras Laffan Industrial City caused a fire in the Pearl GTL complex but was quickly contained. All personnel were reported safe, and the site was secured.
Separately, Qatar’s LNG operations were not directly impacted by the March 18 attack. Shell holds a 30% stake in QatarEnergy LNG. Earlier in March, QatarEnergy declared force majeure across its LNG facilities after shutting in production. The disruptions were compounded by export constraints linked to the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz.
