Savita Oil Expands Synthetic Ester Capacity at Mahad

Savita Oil Technologies commissioned phase two of its synthetic ester plant at Mahad in Maharashtra, the company said in a regulatory filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of India on Feb. 28.

The expansion builds on phase one of the project, which started up on Oct. 16, 2023. That first phase had nameplate capacity of 5,000 metric tons per year, with initial operating capacity of about 3,000 t/y.

The Mahad facility is designed as a multipurpose plant producing synthetic esters mainly for transformer fluids, along with grades used in automotive and industrial lubricants. Savita sells transformer fluids under the Transol brand and lubricants under Savsol.

When phase one was commissioned, Savita said it had become the first company to manufacture and market all three classes of transformer fluids – mineral oil, natural ester and synthetic ester – from a single site.

Demand for electricity in the country is growing quickly, driven by economic expansion, urbanization and increased air conditioning usage. The IEA projects an average 6.3% annual growth from 2025 to 2027, making it one of the world’s fastest-growing major energy markets.

Synthetic esters are increasingly used beyond traditional transformer applications. The fluids offer high thermal stability and good dielectric performance, which has led to their use in electric-vehicle cooling systems, battery immersion cooling and data-center thermal management.

Savita said it secured its first order for an ester-based immersion cooling fluid for energy storage systems in the 2023-24 financial year. The company also received approval from an automotive original equipment manufacturer for one of its ester-based EV coolant products before phase one of the plant was commissioned.

Following the start-up of the first phase, Savita introduced its Transol Synth ester-based insulating fluid for power applications and relaunched its lubricant range under the Savsol Ester5 name. The company said the products were intended to expand its presence in higher-performance lubricant and transformer fluid segments.
