Tongyi Co-Develops China Group Standard for Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluids

Co-developed by Tongyi Lubricants, the group standard “Technical Specification for Green Design Product Assessment of Degradable Lubricants for Hydraulic Systems” was officially released in January in China, reported China’s Sinolub.

A group standard is a voluntary, industry-led technical standard developed by trade associations to address emerging technologies not yet covered by national standards. Recognized under China’s Standardization Law, group standards define technical and evaluation criteria and often serve as precursors to future national requirements.

National policies on green manufacturing, carbon reduction and ecological protection have accelerated the adoption of environmentally compliant materials across the electromechanical and equipment manufacturing sectors. Hydraulic systems are extensively used in construction machinery, industrial automation and energy equipment, making lubricant selection a factor in reducing environmental impact.

The domestic market has lacked unified technical criteria for evaluating environmental performance, degradability and functional consistency of hydraulic lubricants, according to Sinolub.

The introduction of this group standard provides a China-specific technical reference to support regulatory alignment, product benchmarking and industry-wide adoption. It defines technical requirements, evaluation methodologies and assessment criteria for the design of degradable lubricants used in hydraulic systems. It establishes a structured framework for assessing environmental performance, lifecycle considerations and application suitability, with the objective of promoting standardized development and application of environmentally compliant lubricant technologies.

According to the China Mechanical and Electrical Products Circulation Association, implementation of the standard is expected to advance formulation technology, improve product consistency and performance verification and support the high-quality, sustainable development of China’s electromechanical industry.
