Clean Harbors to Add Vertex Rerefineries

Clean Harbors will pay $140 million in cash to acquire Vertex Energy’s Heartland base oil rerefinery in Ohio, a second rerefinery in Louisiana and its used oil collections businesses, the two companies announced yesterday. The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter, subject to approvals and conditions.

Accident Said to Cause Chemtool Fire

Local firefighting officials said last week that a June 14 blaze that heavily damaged a Chemtool grease plant in Rockton, Illinois, was triggered by an accident that occurred during a maintenance procedure. An outside contractor was working to replace insulation on pipes when an oil leak occurred, according to a statement by Rockton Fire Protection District Chief Kirk Wilson.

U.S. Oil Change Sales Down

Sales at oil change and lubrication shops in the United States declined 3% to $6.4 billion in 2020, down from $6.6 billion in 2019, according to a joint report by the Auto Care Association and the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association.

According to a Cox Automotive analysis, June new-vehicle sales in the United States are expected to showcase a market still well above last year’s levels but one that is slowing after a frenzied spring buying season. The company forecast vehicle sales in June to reach a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 16.4 million, 26% higher than 13 million in the same month last year but down from May’s 17 million pace.
