NLGI Unveils New Grease Specs

The National Lubricating Grease Institute has scheduled a January launch for a program to certify high-performance multiuse greases for industrial applications, partly in response to a longtime trend toward sealed-for-life components in the automotive industry.

U.S. Base Oil Output Declines

April base oil production in the United States was 13.2% lower than the five-year running average for that month, after a similar decline in March, according to data released last week by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Vehicle Aging Trend Continues

The average age of light vehicles in the United States rose 8%, from 10.9 years in 2011 to 11.8 years in 2019, and is projected to edge up to 11.9 years in 2020, according to data in the latest report jointly published by Automotive Care Association and the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association.

Brazil’s National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers reported that due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brazil’s vehicle production declined to 729,500 for the first half of this year, down 50.5 percent from 2019’s first half. The association projects production of 1.6 million cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks and buses for full year 2020, down 45 percent from 2019, and expects the sector’s production will not return to 2019 levels until 2025.
