Oxea Raises Prices as Feedstock and Energy Costs Surge

Oxea has issued eight pricing notifications across five product segments within a four-week period, with cumulative increases on certain lubricant-related raw materials reaching approximately U.S.$700 per metric tonne. The company attributed the adjustments to sustained increases in feedstock costs, energy prices and logistics expenses.

It also referenced continued volatility in supply and demand conditions amid geopolitical tensions and disruptions affecting Middle East energy flows, including those linked to tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran and transit risks in the Strait of Hormuz, a route that historically handles a significant share of global seaborne crude exports.

The company is headquartered in Monheim am Rhein, Germany, and operates production facilities in Europe and the United States. Its product range includes oxo intermediates, carboxylic acids, amines and polyols, which are widely used in the production of lubricant additives, synthetic base fluids and related performance chemicals.

Oxo chemicals such as alcohols and acids serve as key building blocks for esters and other compounds used in high-performance lubricants and industrial fluids.

In March, Oxea implemented two rounds of increases for oxo intermediates. The first adjustment, effective March 12, applied to North and South America and included an increase of 10 cents per pound (approximately $220/t) for products such as n-propanol, n-butyl acetate and isobutanol. A subsequent global adjustment, effective April 1, introduced higher increases, with 2-ethylhexanol and n- and iso-butanol rising by €600/t in Europe and $700/t in other regions. 2-ethylhexanol is a key feedstock for synthetic ester lubricants, including di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate.

Carboxylic acids were subject to multiple adjustments over the same period. For 2-ethylhexanoic acid, an initial increase in Europe took effect on March 1, followed by additional revisions later in the month and a further increase effective April 1. When combined, these adjustments resulted in a total increase of €660/t in Europe and $765/t in other regions. Isononanoic acid, which is used in the manufacture of polyol esters, also saw cumulative increases during March, reflecting similar cost pressures.

Price adjustments were also applied to amines and polyols. Oxea reported increases for amines effective March 13, with European adjustments ranging from €160/t to €270/t depending on the product. 2-ethylhexylamine and di-2-ethylhexylamine were increased in both European and non-European markets. In addition, neopentyl glycol prices rose in Europe, with further regional adjustments announced later in the month for selected intermediates in the Americas.
