Banishing Varnish
Petro-Canada Lubricants has developed what it says is a solution to varnish buildup in natural gas turbines. Turboflow Low Varnish turbine oil is proven to resist oxidation and therefore varnish and sludge buildup on critical surfaces of the turbine, says the company. This reduces downtime and improves turbine efficiency. The base oils used are actually Petro-Canadas own, which are highly refined, hydrocracked/hydrotreated, thermally stable and oxidation resistant, said a company representative. Varnish resistance is provided by a balanced formulation. Web: lubricants.petro-canada.com
GTL Bumps PAO
LuBest, a division of Momar Inc., has launched a new line of GTL based synthetic lubricants. The Synplicity line uses natural gas-to-liquid technology to manufacture products that the company says are more versatile, cost-effective and environmentally responsible than conventional lubricants. The product line includes a penetrating lubricant in aerosol and liquid forms, rail curve and switch lubricants in five standard viscosities, and multipurpose lubricants in nine standard viscosities. The company says it is developing release agents, dust suppressants and other specialty chemicals with the technology. Web: www.momar.com/synplicity
Grease Gun Kit
Amsoil aims to provide easy, clean application of synthetic greases with its Deluxe Grease Gun Kit. Intended for automotive, power sports and commercial equipment, the grease gun can develop up to 3,500 psi and comes with two grease delivery options: The pistol-grip design and rigid pipe allow one-handed grease application, while the flexible hose eases access to hard-to-reach locations, the company boasts. Two head ports increase flexibility, while the plastic tip cover protects against contamination from debris. A plunger simplifies loading. Web: www.amsoil.com
Wind Turbine Package
Lubricant producer Primrose is celebrating 100 years of operation with a four-product package for wind turbine operators. Formulated to combat micropitting, heat and shock loads, the fully synthetic, PAO based product line includes Syn-O-Gen 741 gear box lubricant, Syn-O-Gen 777 grease for pitch bearings, Armor Plate with Moly-D 555 for yaw bearings, and Syn-O-Gen 788 hydraulic fluid for hydraulic systems. Lube System Wins Patent
MRG labs has been issued a patent for its latest invention, the StemThief, which addresses the problem of inadequate lubrication of motor operated valves in nuclear plants. The device can be attached to an in-service MOV, where it creates a seal around the stem nut, allowing the introduction of grease with a standard grease gun attached to a typical hydraulic zerk fitting. Pressurized, fresh grease displaces existing lubrication on the stem threads and in the stem nut. Used grease can then be gathered at the base of the nut for sampling and analysis. Protection Packaged
EcoShield VpCI-226 Series Film is meant to protect metal parts during storage a shipment, when they are most susceptible to corrosion, says maker Cortec. The packaging film combines vapor phase and contact corrosion inhibitors with resin and extrusion technology. The company says its product can replace typical oils and desiccants used to protect metals, eliminating extra labor and the need to clean off greasy coatings. Web: www.cortecvci.com
Blend as You Go
The third generation of Maersk Fluid Technologys blending-on-board system, Sea-Mate B1000, is specifically designed for medium-size two-stroke marine engines. The system utilizes in-use lubricant as base stock and blends it with a high-alkalinity cylinder oil concentrate to produce a cylinder lubricant with the optimum base number, the company says. Easily retrofitted to existing vessels, blending-on-board technology has been used in Wartsila/WinGD and Man B&W engines, both of which granted letters of no objection. The new unit, along with its larger sister, the Sea-Mate B3000, means the system can cover engine sizes from 480mm to 980mm bore, according to the company. Web: www.maerskfluid.com
Detect Contaminants
SpectrOil 100 Series elemental spectrometers detect and quantify the presence of elements that can indicate machine wear or fluid contamination, while also monitoring depletion of additives that protect critical assets. The ease of operation makes them ideal for use in laboratories, on-site inspection and maintenance environments, where rapid test results create value, says maker Spectro Scientific. Two basic models are available: SpectrOil 110, which provides a basic engine wear package, and SpectrOil 120, which includes options for wear metals, coolants, fuels and custom applications. New Oil for VW Engines
Champion brand, owned by Wolf Oil Corp., boasts of being first to market with an oil for the newest Volkswagen and Audi engines. The brands OEM-specific Officialtech 0W-20 LL FE motor oil meets VWs 508 00/509 00 specification for 2.0 TFSI 140 kW and 3.0 TDI CR 160 kW engines. The oil ensures superior shear stability to withstand the extreme forces, pressure and strain of these powerful engines, Champion says. Other benefits include a drain interval of 30,000 kilometers or two years of driving, 4 percent fuel economy improvement and lower CO2 emissions. The oil is not backward compatible. MWF Streamlines Stock
Milacron Fluid Technologies latest addition to its Cimcool line is an oil-containing, multi-purpose fluid for both machining and grinding. Cimpulse 49MP offers high performance without the use of traditional extreme pressure lubricants and is recommended for turning, drilling, milling, reaming, boring, tapping and grinding of most metals. It is excellent in hard water situations and leaves a light, manageable residue, the company says. This is a great product for job shops or large manufacturers wanting to minimize the number of products they have to stock, said Bruce Koehler, Cimcool senior product and technical services manager. Formulate for Food Grade
Nyco has secured NSF HX-1 registration for a new synthetic ester. Nycobase 30409 FG, a multipurpose neopolyol ester, is recommended for formulating H1 lubricants for the food industry where incidental food contact may occur. The company says its product combines high resistance to oxidation, low volatility, high viscosity index, low pour point and inherent friction modification/antiwear properties. HX-1 ingredients are used in applications such as hydraulic fluids, gear oils, compressor oils, greases and chain lubricants. Products in Nycos food grade series are halal and kosher certified, and many are also highly biodegradable and renewable, the company adds. Web: www.nyco.fr/en
