16.8 Million Tons of Base Oil

Mineral base oil capacities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa total nearly 16.8 million metric tons per year, a slight increase over a year ago. And another 2.7 million t/y of announced capacity additions are scheduled to stream over the next 18 months, according to our 2014 Base Stock Guide for the EMEA regions.

The 2014 Guide is included with this issue for print-edition subscribers, and is in the mail to qualified digital-edition subscribers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Published annually, our EMEA Base Stock Guide lists the regions 74 mineral oil refineries and rerefineries by company, location and capacity. In addition, it includes the regions 64 manufacturers of key nonconventional base stocks: PIBs, esters, PAO, PAGs, phosphate esters and silicones, with estimated capacities where relevant.

Since 2011, the EMEA regions have seen significant shifts in mineral base oil capacity. Three years ago, API Group I base oils accounted for 91 percent of the regions total capacity. Today, Group I makes up 81 percent. Group II accounted for 2 percent and Group III for 4 percent in 2011; today Group IIs share has risen to 4 percent and Group IIIs to 12 percent of capacity. Naphthenics remained constant at 3 percent of the regions base oil capacity.

The rise of the Middle East as a significant base oil supplier has chipped away at Europes former dominance. In 2011, Western Europe accounted for 48 percent and Central and Eastern Europe for 32 percent of the regions total mineral base oil capacity. Today, Western Europes share has shrunk to 43 percent, and Central/Eastern Europes to 28 percent. The Middle Easts share rose from 13 percent in 2011 to 23 percent today, and Africas share slipped from 7 percent to 6 percent.
