Fast Lubes Get Larger Tickets, More Oil Changes

United States quick lubes average ticket totals reached $76.46, up 7.1 percent, and the average number of oil changes per day rose to 34, up about 7 percent from the year before, National Oil & Lube News reported in the first part of its 2017 Fast Lube Operators Survey.

Published in three parts – in its September, and in upcoming October and November issues – the 2017 survey compiled data from more than 7,000 facilities, up from 5,837 facilities for the 2016 survey, in all 50 U.S. states. The survey examined quick lube operations, prices, demographics, employees, sales, products and services.

The average cost of goods for a full service oil change was $15.42 for conventional, $14.36 for synthetic-blend, $16.11 for high-mileage and $22.83 for full-synthetic.

The percentage of annual sales composed solely of oil change services took a sharp drop to 56 percent in 2017, down from 88 percent. Over the past year, 56 percent of fast lube operators surveyed said sales increased, 9 percent of those surveyed said their sales decreased and 35 percent said their sales stayed the same.

The average number of bays per facility reached four in 2017, up from just over two in 2016.

The average miles customers drove between oil changes decreased to 4,178, down from 4,532 in 2016. The average number of miles on vehicles serviced increased to 91,403, up from 84,112.
