Lubrizols additives segment reported revenue of $1.2 billion, up 20 percent from $1 billion in 2010s second quarter. The company also announced plans to open a new laboratory in China this year.

The increase in revenues was due to an improvement in the combination of price and product mix, favorable currency, as well as slightly higher volume, Lubrizol said.

The additives segment posted $282.4 million in operating income for the quarter ending June 30, up 4 percent from year-earlier results.

As a whole, Lubrizol of Wickliffe, Ohio, had $191.3 million in consolidated earnings in 2011s second quarter, on $1.6 billion in revenues or $2.90 per diluted share. That compared to $201.4 million in consolidated earnings on revenues of $1.4 billion, or $2.88 per diluted share, in 2010s second quarter.

In its quarterly earnings release, Lubrizol projects its acquisition by Berkshire Hathaway will close within the next one to three months.

Lubrizol last week announced plans for a new technical services laboratory that will initially be based on the campus of Jilin University in Zhuhai, Guandong, China. Construction on the laboratory has begun, and Lubrizol expects it to be functional in the third quarter this year.

The laboratory will offer advanced technical services for lubricants and fuel additive customers and OEMs in China. Capabilities will include additive and lubricant blending, physical and chemical analyses and performance testing. Lubrizol said plans also include a used lubricant analysis lab to support the companys synthetic-based compressor lubricant business in the region.

Initially, a lab manager and several technical staff will work in the new additives laboratory. Many will receive extensive training at Lubrizols existing technical service facilities in the U.S. and Europe.

In 2010, Lubrizol announced construction of a new lubricant additive production facility in the Zhuhai Gaolan Port Economic Zone, within 20 miles of the Jilin University campus. Lubrizol anticipates close collaboration between the new laboratory, the new production facility and its joint venture with the LanZhou Lubrizol LanLian Additive Co. Ltd. The new manufacturing site in Zhuhai will also allow future expansion of laboratory infrastructure in China.

While our plans include the eventual transition of our laboratory testing capabilities to our new plant, we look forward to a lasting relationship with the university in areas such as technical collaboration and employee recruiting, said Tsung-Fei Tang, vice president of Lubrizol Additives, China.
