Biden Ratchets Fuel Economy Regs

President Joseph Biden’s administration announced a series of fuel economy standards this week, a move viewed as further spurring the nation’s shift to low-emission vehicles, especially electric vehicles. The new regulation will ratchet fuel efficiency requires through 2026 and set the stage for even more aggressive mandates in the years after that.

ExxonMobil Helps Scale Bio Base Stocks

ExxonMobil entered a joint development agreement with biobased base stock manufacturer BioAccelergy to commercially scale the latter’s products, the companies announced last week. BioAccelergy makes plant-based hydrocarbon base stocks for lubricants, transformer fluids and drilling fluids.

Nye Lubricates Space Telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope, scheduled to launch Dec. 24 on a NASA mission from French Guiana, will rely on a proprietary oil provided by Nye Lubricants to lubricate multiple mechanisms within the telescope. The launch comes months after the successful landing of the Mars Perseverance Rover, which used the company’s barrier film formulation product.

Perstorp Oxo AB will increase prices effective Jan. 1, 2022, in the United States for 2-ethylhexanoic acid by 10 cents per pound and for n-butyric acids by 11 cents/lb, citing the impacts of supply and demand as well as increasing raw material prices. 2-EHA is a chemical intermediate used as a compound in the production of synthetic lubricants as well as oil additives, and n-butyric acid is also used in production of lubricants.
