A new ASTM International guide developed to help the marine industry determine whether a lubricant is environmentally acceptable will begin the first round of balloting next month, according to industry officials.
Seventy-two percent of vessels are projected to use very-low-sulfur fuel oil after the International Maritime Organizations IMO 2020 regulation goes into effect next year, a marine lubricant supplier said recently, and the shipping industrys shortage of experience using such fuels increases the level of uncertainty about implications for marine lubricants.
The International Maritime Organizations 2020 regulations wont just affect the marine fuels and shipping industries, but is predicted to impact base oil refining as well. In fact, early prognostications on its effects are already starting to take shape.
Marine lubricant demand remained on its steady - if slightly declining - course in 2018, totaling an estimated 2.3 million tons, according to consultancy Kline & Co. The firm expects that number to remain stable in the coming years.
