ExxonMobil plans to expand the corporate campus it is building north of Houston to accommodate an additional 2,000-plus employees presently working at offices in Fairfax, Va., Akron, Ohio, and other Texas locations.
Affected operations include ExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialties Marketing Co.; ExxonMobil Refining and Supply Co.; ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Co.; and ExxonMobil Fuels, all based in Fairfax County. The 110 employees at Akron-based ExxonMobil Chemical Co. will relocate, as will select employees from ExxonMobil Research and Engineering and ExxonMobil Chemical at the Baytown refinery outside of Houston.
Once completed in 2015, the 385-acre campus near Spingwoods Village, 30 miles outside of Houston, will house about 10,000 employees in multiple low-rise office buildings, laboratories and conference and training centers. It will include a child care facility, wellness center and other employee amenities. Construction of the campus began in 2011. Employees are expected to begin relocating in 2014.
When we first announced plans, we left open the possibility that workers from other ExxonMobil sites would be added to the Houston campus, a company spokesman said.
Employees at ExxonMobils corporate headquarters in Irving, Texas; XTO Energy, Inc., in Fort Worth, Texas; the Washington, D.C., office; and the Clinton and Paulsboro research facilities in New Jerseyare not included in plans forthe coming move.
Co-location of the downstream and additional chemical groups in Houston will enable ExxonMobil to continue to be the world leader in our business, provide an innovative and collaborative work environment and attract the best talent for the future, a company spokesman said. It just makes sense for ExxonMobil to consolidate its resources to achieve maximum efficiency and better share expertise.
ExxonMobil does not anticipate any staff reductions related to the move, the spokesman said.
The 125-acre Fairfax campus, which is 12 miles west of Washington, D.C., was headquarters to Mobil Corp. before it was bought by Exxon in 1999. The campus, built in 1980, is one of the largest Class A office campuses in the Washington region, at 1.15 million square feet. Fairfax Countys Department of Tax Administrations Real Estate Assessment places the value of the property at slightly less than $200 million. According to initial reports, the campuss 2,000 employees will all be moved by 2015. ExxonMobil is one of Fairfax Countys largest employers.
The Fairfax campus is a world-class property, an ExxonMobil spokesman said. We dont anticipate there will be any difficulty in finding businesses that will be interested in locating there.
ExxonMobil does not own the Akron property located at 330 S. Main St., according to Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise.
