Bayer Beefs Up Biocides

Bayer Chemicals has expanded its portfolio of biocides by acquiring the Tektamer product line from Ondeo Nalco Co., part of France’s Suez Group.

The Tektamer line isbased on formulations with active ingredient thiabendazole (TBZ), which is one of the leading fungicidal chemistries for metalworking fluids and other applications such as pulp and paper slurries and additives and wet-state paint.

The TBZ line was one of two that Bayer acquired from Naperville, Illinois-based Ondeo Nalco. The other, based on active ingredient dibromodicyanobutane, is used as a preservative in adhesives, construction compounds, paints and other materials.

The companies did not disclose terms of the deal, which gives Bayer certain patent-protected formulations. Bayer already markets biocides, including phenolics sold under the Preventol brand.

The transaction continues a trend of consolidation in the biocides market. Dow Chemical, Arch Chemical and Troy Corp. are among the companies that have acquired other biocide businesses the past few years.
